EPP News Bureau – Hyderabad

The objective of this session was to provide a platform to facilitate interaction between these groups, eventually leading to collaborations for commercialisation of stem cell research/knowledge

The three three-day international conference on ‘Emerging trends in biotechnology and stem cells-technology’ commencing on May 2, 2002 will also offer an interactive session on May 4. The session will cover various topics and will be open for select participants only.

The interactive session provides an excellent opportunity to scientists, medical specialists, biotechnologists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, etc, to exchange information and share the knowledge relating to stem cell research, said Dr B S Bajaj, chairman of the All India Biotech Association, southern chapter.

The objective of this session was to provide a platform to facilitate interaction between these groups, eventually leading to collaborations for commercialisation of stem cell research/knowledge.

He said the conference would have eight technical sessions to be addressed by eminent scientists and specialists in the field of biotechnology relating to stem cells technology and research.

Prof Martin J Evans, director of Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, UK, is expected to deliver the keynote address on ‘‘Stem cells research’’ in the inaugural session of the conference. Prof Martin is the originator of embryonic stem cells and gene therapy and had received recently the prestigious ‘‘Lasker Award’’, which is considered as American Noble Prize.

This conference would bring together academicians, researchers and industrialists under one roof to discuss the potential and prospects of stem cells-based technologies and provide a platform to forge alliances both at national and international levels.

Biotech and pharmaceutical industries will be greatly benefited with the new emerging trends in biotechnology for future developmental leads in research and business.

An exhibition will also be organised on instruments/ equipment/ materials, etc, coinciding with this conference. Chief Minister, N Chandrababu will inaugurate this international meet.
