‘High-end biotech research is still a long way in India’
A Rhodes scholar, Prof V S Chauhan, obtained his Ph D from the University of Delhi and D Phil from Oxford University. Currently, the director at International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (ICGEB) Dr Chauhan was previously professor at University of Delhi. He is in the panel of experts of WHO, EU and is elected fellow, Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences and Indian Society of Parasitology. Prof Chauhan has to his credit around 100 research publications in national and international journals. He is also recipient of number of awards and honours including Rhodes scholarship at Oxford, senior scholar award at Oxford, Dr MOT Iygengar Memorial award for outstanding research in malaria by ICMR, Ranbaxy Research award for pharmaceutical sciences and Shri Om Prakash Bhasin award for Science and Technology. Prof Chauhan in an exclusive interview with Jayashree Padmini says that without good infrastructure and basic research India cannot have applied research capabilities. Excerpts:
